Why Where You Holiday, Eat and Spend Time Can Determine Your Deal Flow

The most connected people in private markets have understood for decades that the room you choose to be in outside of work is as important as the one inside it. Here is the data to prove it.

We want to share something with you that we’ve been thinking about.

Some of the most significant conversations in our professional lives have not happened in meeting rooms. The conversations have happened at dinner tables, on the margins of events we almost did not attend, and in rooms that (on the surface) had nothing to do with business. The introduction that changed the direction of a relationship. The conversation that started over a shared meal and six months later became something real.

It took us a while to realise this was not luck. It was the predictable result of a decision we had been making, often unconsciously, about where we chose to spend our time.

This piece is about strategy – not about lifestyle.

The Data on Where Relationships Actually Form

2025 research from Family Office Exchange finds that nearly 80% of UHNW individuals prefer connections introduced through mutual relationships, and warm referrals result in a 75% higher response rate in cross-border investment opportunities. The implication is significant and the most valuable introductions in private markets do not come from cold outreach, LinkedIn, or formal networking events, but rather from someone who already trusts you, vouching for you to someone they already trust.

Research published in April 2026 confirms this pattern. UHNW families do not seek professionals in isolation. They look for professionals within networks they already trust. Professional recommendations form the foundation, peer experiences reinforce confidence, recognition offers validation, and reputation provides ongoing reassurance.

The question this raises is not how to be better at networking. It is how to place yourself, consistently and intentionally, in environments where trust forms naturally.

Altrata’s relationship intelligence research shows that philanthropy plays a major role in many UHNW social networks. Connections often emerge through nonprofit boards, private foundations, cultural institutions, universities, and policy organisations. These environments frequently bring together leaders from different industries, creating opportunities for relationships that extend far beyond professional settings. And the data is specific: 59% of HNW volunteering or philanthropic engagement leads to additional business alliances within two years, according to the Knight Frank Philanthropy Tracker.

None of this is happening in a formal business context. It is all happening in the spaces people choose with their discretionary time.

The Environment Changes What Becomes Possible

There is a reason the golf course has been a cliche of business relationship-building for a century. It is not the golf but it is the four to five hours of shared, uninterrupted time in a setting where the usual professional defences are lowered.

“Informal settings are where genuine human connections are forged. A standard workday rarely offers hours of dedicated, uninterrupted interaction. This casual environment makes people more open and authentic – the absolute bedrock of trust in any partnership.”

The specific activity matters far less than the principle. Shared experience, extended time, a context removed from transactional pressure. These are the conditions under which the most durable business relationships form. The golf course is one version of this. A dinner with the right people is another. A private gathering, a shared cause, an event where the agenda is connection rather than commerce.

Research on how golf intersects with business relationship-building consistently points to the same mechanism: the informal setting breaks down hierarchical barriers and allows people to connect on a personal level before a professional one. The same dynamic operates at any gathering where the environment is intentional and the people in the room have been chosen carefully. What changes is the quality of what can be said, the depth of what can be shared, and the speed at which trust can form.

The Most Connected People Are Doing This Deliberately

The UHNW population has grown 33% in the last five years, reaching 626,619 individuals globally according to Altrata’s World Ultra Wealth Report 2026. This is a group that is not short of formal opportunities to meet and do business. What it is increasingly short of is the time and the environments to have the conversations that actually matter.

The founders and investors who are ahead of deal flow in our network are not the ones with the largest contact lists, but they are the ones who have understood (often through years of trial and error) that the quality of the relationships they build in their discretionary time compounds in the same way as any other strategic investment.

They choose the events they attend carefully. They say no to the conference where they will be one of three hundred and yes to the dinner where they will be one of twelve. They invest in shared experiences with people they want to know better, not just the people they already know well. And they understand that the introduction they receive on a Sunday evening at the right table is worth more than anything that comes through a formal business development process on a Monday morning.

What We Have Seen in Our Own Rooms

When we built The Syndicate Global, we were deliberate about this from the beginning. Not about the agenda, the speakers, or the format – but the environment.

The question we asked ourselves was not what the most efficient networking format would be. It was what conditions allowed people to be genuinely honest with each other. What environment produces the kind of conversation that does not happen in a standard meeting room. What room, designed with intention, allows the right people to discover what they have in common before they have any reason to do business together.

The answer, consistently, is one that removes transactional pressure and it is where the time is long enough, the setting warm enough, and the group small enough that people can be real with each other. Every outcome we have seen come from The Syndicate Global has started there. Not with a pitch or a proposal or a formal introduction, but with a conversation that became something.

The Takeaway

Most founders and investors manage their professional time with a great deal of intentionality. Calendar discipline, meeting structures, decision frameworks. Very few apply the same intentionality to the question of where they spend the rest of their time.

The most connected people in private markets have understood, often intuitively, that this is a mistake. That the ROI on attending the right dinner, joining the right board, or being in the right room on a Saturday evening is not measurable in the short term but is consistently one of the highest-returning investments they make over a decade.

The deal flow does not come from the formal business development process. It comes from the trust that forms in the spaces in between.

Choose those spaces deliberately.
